Blowing My Mind

Items that I have collected, in no particular order, that BLOW MY MIND.

I have been collecting and writing down information that blows my mind. Here is a list, in no particular order, of information that I have picked up shortly after I was born in 1958. It is crazy how much information that has changed or is changing as I grow older.

The Universe

In no particular order:

The universe was created 13.8 billion years ago.

Big Bang - Only two elements were formed one million of a millionth of a millionth of a second after the big bang. Because of heat after the big bang these two elements were created.

1. 75% hydrogen

2. 25% helium

400 million years after the big bang, the stars are formed under extreme heat. The stars start to fail and explode which created carbon, oxygen, iron, nitrogen cooked and then exploded. E=MC² shows that Energy and Mass are interchangeable which is how energy turned into elements or mass.

The earth is 4.543 billion years old. Life on earth evolved after billions of years later. 3.5 million years ago life was formed in the mud flats of Tanzania. Life thought to be human walked earth 2 million years ago.

Three miles below the surface of the earth, scientists discovered microbes thriving. Yes, there is life in high heat with no air. Six miles below the surface of the ocean, scientists discovered methane producing bacteria. More life in a strange place. The point is, life can be on other planets and statistically, we are lead to believe life is on other plants. The James Webb Telescope was built to figure out if distant planets contain life by scanning the planets atmosphere.

Universe is comprised of 118 known elements of which these are the main

        1. Hydrogen (70%)
        2. Helium (noble gas) (28%)
        3. Oxygen (~1%)
        4. Carbon
        5. Nitrogen
        6. Other

Earth is comprised of

        1. Hydrogen
        2. Not helium
        3. Oxygen
        4. Carbon
        5. Nitrogen
        6. Other

The earths atmosphere is comprised of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.9% argon, and 0.1% other gasses which comprise of carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and neon.

Our solar system contains one star and eight planets that are located on the edge of the Milky Way.

The Milky Way Galaxy contains 200 billion stars.

Our Milky Way Galaxy contains 20 billion earth like planets.

The universe contains over 2 trillion galaxies. That is hard to take in.

The universe is expanding and was proven by Edwin Hubble in 1920.

Universe = 13.7 billion years old.

Earth is 4.543 billion years old.

Man is 2 million years old.

One Light Year equals 5.88 trillion miles.

Light from the sun takes 8 minutes to reach earth.

Andromeda galaxy is the furthest distance you can see with the naked eye and is 2 million light years away.

Gravitational waves have been detected when two black holes have collided. A pair of detectors, one in Washington and the other in Louisiana, measure the ripples in the earth's gravity which pick up the collisions.

We still do not know what gravitation force is. We can measure gravity, we just don't know why gravity exists.

Our Solar System

Our solar system is almost flat. Most planets are orbiting within three degrees of Earth's orbit.

The sun is one million times larger than the earth.

Our solar system, travels around the center of the galaxy at 560,000 MPH. The center of our galaxy contains a massive black hole which is 4,000,000 times the mass of our sun.

The space station is 254 miles from earth and travels around the earth at 17,000 mph.

The radius of the earth is almost 4,000 miles.

You could feel gravity in the space station if it was still, but because it is traveling at 17,000 mph it is constantly falling towards the earth so you feel weightless in the space station..

James Webb space telescope was launched Dec 24, 2021 in French Guiana. They launched as close to the equator as possible, because the closer you are to the equator, the Earth's rotation will give the launch an additional push of 1,037.69 MPH into space.

Earth rotates 1,037.69 miles per hour at the equator

Drop a ball on earth and catch it. If you caught the ball one second later, the earth would have traveled 18 miles around the sun.

Earth moves around the sun at 67,000 MPH

Earth's core is solid iron and 7,000 to 13,000 degrees F and rotates slower than earth

Earths core is a solid mass of iron and nickel. Because of the pressure exerted on the core, the iron and nickel remain a solid. Because the solid mass rotates slower than the earth, it creates a magnetic field at the north and south pole. The solid mass of iron and nickel occasionally flip which causes the poles magnetic field to switch. North becomes south and south becomes north.

Earth axis is 23.5 degrees and rotates around the sun in an elliptical orbit. The sun is so large you could place 1,000,000 earths into the sun.

SUN - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Periodic extinctions on earth have been caused by items crashing into the earth. A large item impacted the Earth which created so much smoke and ash, it cooled the Earth's atmosphere by blocking the suns rays so much, the ice age was created.

Global Warming

Earth's atmosphere is made up of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 0.9% argon by volume. The remaining 0.1% is made up of trace amounts of other gases, including: carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, neon, and ozone.

We produce 52 Billion Tons of Green House Gas per Year

29% Making things (cement, steel, plastic)

26% Plugging in (electricity)

22% Growing things (plants, animals)

16% Getting around (planes, trucks, ships)

7% Keeping warm and cool

Ice cores taken on earth show, in the last 800,000 years, the CO2 level never surpassed 300 parts per million (PPM) until the industrial age started.

NASA has been tracking the huge rise in carbon dioxide. The table above shows how much carbon dioxide has been produced since the start of the industrial age.

The increased presence of CO2 could be what is starting the end of human life on earth.

Five of the top 20 companies on the Fortune 500 US companies list in 2024 by revenue are oil/energy companies.

Six of the top 10 companies on the Fortune 500 global list of companies by revenue are oil/energy companies.

Seven of the worlds top 10 companies by profit are oil/energy companies.

In 2023 Saudi Aramco (oil) became the second largest company (by revenue) in the world. Their revenue was $603 billion with profits of $159 billion. Why we pay so much for gas makes me scratch my head.

In 2023 Saudi Aramco, Exxon Mobile, and Shell grew their revenues 51%, 45%, and 42% respectively.

In 2023, the United States produced 21.691 million barrels of petroleum per day, which includes 12.933 million barrels of crude oil, 6.431 million barrels of hydrocarbon gas, and 1.301 million barrels of biofuels and oxygenates. The United States has been the world's largest producer of crude oil since 2018, and crude oil production has more than doubled between 2011 and 2022.

Everyday the world uses more than 4 billion gallons of oil each day.

Mid-Atlantic Backroad Discovery Route MABDR

The BDR is a motorcycle route that goes from Damascus Virginia to the New York State border. Some of the travel is on two laneroads, while other is on Forest Service gravel roads. I started in Damascus which is a great little town the Appalachian trail goes through. You can see my bike on the right.  the Appalachian trail and the Mid-Atlantic BDR slowly meander back and forth through the country. I've met a couple guys that were hiking all the way non-stop.  This is a well photographed gap that is fun to go through.  Sceenic overlook that I turned around for.  This was taken off a dirt road. I stopped and took this photo and then a hiker appeared out of nowhere. She scared me pretty good.  First night camping. Hard to sleep when you don't have your favorite body pillow and covers.

Mount Rainier July 28, 2024

Mount Rainier is an active volcano located in Washington. Wildflower meadows circle the icy volcano in July and August while ancient forests cover the lower slopes. We walked up the section that is called Paradise which is famous for its gorgeous views and wildflowers.  While we were in Paradise in July, the area is known for its winter activities. You will find people snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sledding.  We flew into Seattle and met Rob and Rebecca then headed on a drive to Mt. Rainier.  We did see the top of Rainier, but its low cloud cover was typical for the day. Rob, Rebecca (R2), Tam and Bob The walk was up hill for a while and this old guy was hurting the next day.  I have no information about the cabin located in the bottom of the beautiful valley.  The flowers looked like they were professionally grown.  The waterfalls were scattered all through the walk. So pretty and full of life.  We even saw some wildlife.
